1.What is SRAM?
The full name of SRAM is Static Random-Access Memory,which can hold data firmly when it is powered on,and does not need to be refreshed as frequently as DRAM.It stores every bit of information by the latch unit built by transistors,so it is extremely fast and stable,and it is naturally suitable to"live"on the same chip as the logic circuit.The first-level cache of CPU,the second-level cache of CPU and the cache of GPU that you see in mobile phones and computers are all behind the banner of SRAM.
2.Why is the chip design inseparable from SRAM?
(1)The fastest.
Inside SRAM chip,the operation speed of CPU core is extremely fast,while reading data from external DRAM is relatively slow,which will form"waiting delay".The reading speed of SRAM is one order of magnitude faster than that of DRAM,and it does not need to be constantly refreshed and charged like DRAM,and the data can be stably maintained when it is powered on.Therefore,the first-level and second-level caches(L1/L2 Cache)of CPU and GPU all adopt SRAM.Without it,the processor can only"idle"frequently,and the computing power can't be exerted no matter how strong it is.
(2)The area is large.
In a typical SoC(System on Chip)chip,SRAM will occupy about 30%of the chip area.SRAM has regular structure and compact layout,which is suitable for large-scale replication.Wafer foundry(Fab factory)will take SRAM as the core test carrier when developing new process nodes-only when the yield of SRAM reaches the standard can this process be stable and reliable.In other words,whether SRAM is good or not directly determines whether this chip can be mass-produced.
(3)Seamless compatibility with the standard logic process,and stress-free integration.
Compared with embedded storage schemes such as NOR Flash or eDRAM,the biggest engineering advantage of SRAM is that it is completely compatible with standard CMOS logic processes.SRAM chip can directly integrate SRAM into SoC without additional mask layer or special process.This"plug and play"feature makes SRAM the first choice for on-chip cache,register file,FIFO buffer and other scenarios.
